Call Puerto Ordaz. Workshop “Indigenous peoples, socio-environmental conflicts and extractivism. What data is there and what can we do with it?

Vendata and the Press and Society Institute (Ipys) of Venezuela offers the opportunity to members of civil society, journalists and students to apply for the workshop "Indigenous peoples, socio-environmental conflicts and extractivism. What data is there and what can we do with it" to be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at the facilities of the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Puerto Ordaz, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In this activity, information and tools will be given on the legal framework of indigenous peoples, socio-environmental conflicts in Venezuela and how journalistic coverage of indigenous affairs should be done.

The workshop will also discuss the data related to the subject and will teach how to use the search engine Vendata.org,

The workshop will be given by Minerva Vitti, a journalist graduated from the Andrés Bello Catholic University who has collaborated with international media such as the Country of Spain and Global Voices; and national ones such as Armando.info, El Estímulo, Historias que Laten (formerly Revista Marcapasos) and SIC magazine of Fundación Centro Gumilla. Since 2010 she began to write about the violation of the rights of indigenous peoples and communities in Venezuela. In 2016, she obtained a special mention at the Ipys awards for the investigative report "An AIDS epidemic is decimating the Warao," published on the investigative journalism portal Armando.Info.

She will be accompanied by Katherine Pennacchio, a reporter and specialist in data journalism. She currently writes for Runrun.es and is coordinator of the portal's Memories and Accounts emptying project Vendata.org.

The activity is completely free, and to apply, those interested must fill out the following form. Applications will be open until June 12 and those selected will be notified on June 14.
